GRAD INFORMATION SESSION
September 28, 2009
1. Check the Grad binder in Student Services. The Credit Counselling Summaries give total credit counts and remaining compulsory credits needed. Be especially careful to check English credits. Please initial and write OK on your form if it is correct. If there are errors or omissions, it is your responsibility to inform us. You must have 30 credits including 18 compulsory credits to earn the OSSD. Please fill out the activity sheet and file it in the Grad binder. This information is helpful if you wish to be considered for in-school and external scholarships and awards. You may pick up e!NFO and the schedule for University Information Night when you check your credit count
For graduates applying to an Ontario university log on to: www.electronicinfo.ca
and www.ouac.on.ca
Universities require a minimum of 6 University (U) or University/College (M) level credits for admission. Open level courses, including Coop, count as credits toward the OSSD, but are not acceptable as university requirements.
Check each institution for specific credit requirements and do not assume that requirements are the same for all universities. Check the Ontario University Application Centre website (www.ouac.on.ca) and university view books and web-sites for information on admissions, cut-offs and deadlines.
Some students currently only have 5 U or M level courses on your schedule. Unless a U or M course is added, the universities will not consider you to be eligible for admission.
If you are applying to a community college log on to: www.ontariocolleges.ca
Be sure that you have ENG 4C (or ENG 4U) as your senior English credit. If you have the OLC4O or Coop, the compulsory credit count may show that 4 English credits are earned; however, be sure that you have the English credit needed to meet college entrance requirements. Also check each college’s entrance requirements for any other course requirements such as MAP 4C or MCT 4C. Some college programs also have specific science requirements.
To be eligible to graduate and to meet post-secondary entrance requirements, you must also fulfill Group 1, 2 and 3 credit requirements, pass the OSSLT, and complete 40 hours of Community Involvement
Community Involvement: please follow the guidelines and dates provided by your Religion teacher. If you do not have Religion semester one, keep your record of hours until semester two. Only students who earned a Religion credit at summer school are to submit their Community Involvement records to Student Services. Submit completed hours before mid-term.
Do not wait to submit all your hours until the end of the year if they have not yet been entered.
The deadline to submit Community Hours is Friday, May 14, 2010
2. Scholarships: information arrives in Student Services throughout the year. Applications are organized by month and placed in the Scholarship Binder. Copies of applications for student use will be kept in a labeled hanging file. Please check these regularly. Information is also posted on Student Services bulletin boards and is available on University and College web-sites. If you plan apply for scholarships, make up an outline of your extracurricular activities, school, employment, and community involvement and achievements and save this in your computer. Add to it and keep it updated.
If you require letters of reference, please approach your referees well ahead of the deadline to allow them adequate time to complete this task. If you will be approaching them more than once, please ask them to save a copy of the letter.
3. SSOLA is the on-line application process for Ontario colleges and universities. Students are responsible for applying on-line to college (OCAS) or university (OUAC) .
Counsellors do not process college or university applications. The school will electronically transmit your grade 11 and current courses, biographic information and credit history. It is imperative that you check on-line to see that the proper data is being transmitted because only Student Services can correct academic data.
The OUAC mails your PIN numbers (required to access the on-line application system) to St. Basil in November.
