St. Basil Secondary Chaplaincy Services

As your school's chaplain, I have two main roles . . . A listener and a facilitator. The less visible of the two is that of a Listener. Sometimes things happen in our lives that are not always easy to deal with. We could be struggling with a problem with our friends, or a difficulty in our family. Perhaps, someone we love is very ill, or has died. We are not meant to struggle alone . . . If you or a friend of yours have some concerns and would like to talk, please drop by; my office is in Room 401, just past the amphitheatre. I usually keep the office open at lunch if you would like to drop by then or make an appointment.

The other role I have as your chaplain, and the more viable of the two is that of a facilitator. I facilitate or organize a variety of school functions such as school liturgies, celebrations and retreats. It's hard in such a large school, to get everyone together. However, like any family, it's important to celebrate together. Usually each month, we gather as a school community and celebrate a school wide liturgy or service.

The liturgies are usually quite meaningful because of the wonderful creativity on the part of the students. Students have made liturgies come alive through drama, music and a St. Basil favorite - making our own videos.

Our school's patron saint, St. Basil, was always concerned with people who were poor. Even in his youth, he organized soup kitchens. Following his example of reaching out to those in need, students and staff of SBSS have always been generous with their time and have participated in projects to help those who are in need.

I invite you to support some of these projects and encourage you to get involved in your school. Please know that I am one of many people here at St. Basil Secondary who wants to support you during your high school years; don't hesitate to come by to talk, share an idea or lend a hand. Let's make this a great year!
